If you are spending a few days in Cairo, Egypt’s capital city, we would definitely recommend visiting Saqqara to see the first Egyptian pyramid ever built, the Step Pyramid of pharaoh Djoser.

Of course, there are so many other famous monuments in the country that really help to bring Egypt’s ancient history to life. Some prime examples would be the awe-inspiring Abu Simbel Temples; the vast Karnak Temple complex; Hatshepsut Temple, and the Valley of Kings.

The Valley of Kings is an ancient burial ground where pharaohs and nobles were entombed during the New Kingdom era. Today, it is one of Egypt’s most visited archaeological sites. It is also where visitors can see the tomb of King Tutankhamun, along with his mummy.

One of the most amazing things about Egypt is the fact that there are historical attractions and breathtaking archaeological sites located all over the country. However, many of the very best ones are located along the banks of the Nile River from Aswan to Luxor, and the best way to see and enjoy these is by way of a Nile cruise.

Dahabiya Nile Cruises

A Dahabiya is also a traditional sail boat but they are considerably bigger than a felucca. They are essentially river yachts with two large sails, one at the back and one at the front. Most of them will have around 8 to 12 cabins, although some might only have 5 or 6 cabins. Those that are used for Nile cruise purposes will have a dining area and a covered outdoor recreation area.

Some of the better ones will also have an open-air Jacuzzi, Wi-Fi access, and etc. In fact, some Dahabiyas are nothing short of luxurious.

Most Dahabiya operators will allow their vessels to sail providing that at least two cabins have been booked. This makes them a fantastic choice for families and/or small groups of friends, or anyone who wants to avoid the large crowds which are common on the bigger cruise ships. Unfortunately, Dahabiya Nile cruises tend to cost more than regular Nile cruise packages. With that having been said, nothing can compare to sailing silently along the River Nile on a Dahabiya. It is well and truly a magical experience.

What to see and do in Egypt?

Most people who visit Egypt for the first time are longing to visit and explore the country’s many ancient sites, such as the legendary Pyramids of Giza. After all, the Great Giza Pyramid is one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, and the last one still standing. Just imagine being able to tell friends and family that you have not only seen the Pyramids of Giza, but that you have actually been inside the Pyramids of Giza.

What to pack for a holiday to Egypt?

Egypt is a warm country, and it is best to keep this in mind when packing for your Egypt holiday packages from Australia. Lightweight and light-colored cotton garments are by far the best choice. You may also want to pack in some formal items of clothing for wearing in the evenings.

Women should also consider packing in a head scarf. A scarf can be useful for protecting yourself against the sun, and it will also be necessary if you visit any mosques because women are expected to cover their hair and shoulders when entering a mosque.

We also recommend packing in some comfortable footwear, and especially if you have chosen and Egypt itinerary that includes a lot of sightseeing tours and excursion. A pair of good quality sunglasses is also highly recommended, as is a good quality sunscreen lotion. We also always recommend a wide-brimmed hat, which you can either take with you, or simply buy once you get to Egypt.

How long is a flight from Australia to Egypt?

The actual flight time from Australia to Egypt will depend on a number of things. However, assuming that you book a direct non-stop flight to Egypt, the average flight time is about 16 hours.

Are any vaccinations needed for visiting Egypt?

The Egyptian government does not require Australian passport holders to have any compulsory vaccinations prior to visiting the country. However, we strongly recommend that you contact your local healthcare provider to the latest up to date information and advice regarding vaccines prior to booking any Egypt holidays from Australia.

Is the water in Egypt safe to drink?

In some of the more expensive hotels, and on some Nile cruise ships, it is supposedly safe to drink water from the faucets. However, personally advise against drinking tap water while you are in Egypt. Bottled water is both cheap and plentiful. We even supply free bottled water to our clients during tours and road trips.

Will I need a visa to visit Egypt?

Yes, if you plan on booking any Egypt holidays from Australia, you will need an entry tourist visa and a valid passport. Australian passport holders can get an entry tourist visa from an Egyptian embassy or consular office in Australia or they can apply online for an Egyptian e-Visa.

Alternatively, you can get your Egyptian visa in the arrival halls at any international airport in Egypt when you arrive for your Egypt holiday package from Australia.
