What is the Best Type of Egypt Tour to Book?

Egypt, as a country, has so much to offer tourists. From magical Nile River cruises to breathtaking desert adventures, to relaxing family holidays on the Red Sea coast, Egypt has it all. On the downside, with so much to see and do, it really is important to plan your Egypt trip thoroughly so that you can make the most of the time you have during your stay in the country. Three important things to think about when planning a trip to Egypt include:

  • Your preferred theme
  • Your available budget
  • Your preferred duration

THEME

What is your main reason for wanting to visit Egypt? Do you want to spend most of your time in Egypt visiting the country’s many ancient monuments? Do you want to spend most of your time in the Sahara Desert visiting different oases, or are you just longing for a relaxing break near the sea? And, do you also want to enjoy a Nile cruise during your trip? Knowing what sort of holiday you want when you visit Egypt can make planning your trip a lot easier.

BUDGET

For many people, budget has the biggest influence over their holiday choices. You really do need to be realistic about your available budget. If you don’t have enough money for the sort of holiday you want, you should either postpone your vacation in Egypt, or you need to be willing to make a few sacrifices. For example, you will need to accept the fact that you may not be able to see and do all that you were hoping to see and do. We will talk a little more about budget a bit later.

DURATION

The duration of a person’s holiday is often influenced by their budget. A lot of people find themselves in a sort of “quantity vs. quality” situation. Do you choose a luxury 6 or 7 day Egypt vacation, or do you sacrifice on quality and choose a budget 10 or 12 day vacation instead? This is, of course, something which only you can decide on. It is also worth keeping in mind that some budget tour packages are not much different to some luxury tour packages. In some cases it is only the accommodation choices that differ. In other words, you don’t always have to sacrifice much in order to enjoy a slightly longer vacation in the country.

Nile River Cruises vs Lake Nasser Cruises

It is clear to us that most people who book Egypt travel packages from USA want to enjoy a Nile River cruise and/or a Lake Nasser cruise during their trip to Egypt. While some of our Egypt travel packages include a Lake Nasser cruise, the vast majority include a Nile cruise instead. These Nile Cruise and Stay packages are by far and away our most frequently booked Egypt tours. Our stand-alone Nile cruises are also immensely popular, mostly among people who want to explore Egypt at their own pace but also want to experience a cruise on the Nile during their stay.

Are Nile River cruises better than Lake Nasser cruises? Not necessarily. However, If you have never been to Egypt before, or if you have never experienced a Nile cruise, then a Nile cruise would probably be a better option rather than a Lake Nasser cruise. No matter which one you choose, you definitely won’t be dissapointed.

If you want to see some of Egypt’s most famous ancient sites, such as the Valley of Kings and Karnak, then a Nile cruise would be the way to go. On the other hand, if you want to see some the country’s lesser-known ancient monuments, then a Lake Nasser cruise would be the way to go. Nile cruises and Lake Nasser cruises both offer a perfect blend of sightseeing and relaxation.

How Much Do Nile Cruises and Lake Nasser Cruises Cost?

The cost on Nile River cruises and Lake Nasser cruises can vary drastically, depending on the type of vessel, cruise duration, and quality. Nile River cruises on large 5-Star cruise ships start at around $500, while the same sort of cruises on Lake Nasser start at around $600.

Dahabiya cruises tend to cost a bit more, as do luxury cruises, some of which can cost up to $2,000 or more, but these will typically longer durations.

Sahara Desert Adventures

Several of our Egypt Tours packages from USA feature a Sahara Desert adventure. Some may only include a single day in the desert, while others might include several days in the desert. Regardless of the duration, our desert adventures are done in comfort and style using clean and modern air-conditioned 4×4 vehicles.

Egypt’s Sahara Desert region is home to several oases, and visiting some of these is a great way to experience authentic Bedouin culture and hospitality. Many of our desert tours also include a visit to the White Desert. This protected area is Egypt’s most famous desert area. It is also one of the world’s most unique desert landscapes.

Contrary to what many people believe, Egypt’s desert region is also home to an abundance of ancient ruins and relics. Because these ancient treasures are away from the main tourist trail, many visitors never get to see them. If you have already seen all of Egypt’s most touted attractions, such as the pyramids, then we would certainly recommend that you consider booking one of our Egypt Tours packages that include at least a few days in the Sahara.

Do American Citizens Need a Visa for Egypt?

American citizens and those traveling on an American passport need a valid visa to visit Egypt. Egypt tourist visas can be obtained via an Egyptian embassy or consular office in the USA or by applying online for an Egypt e-Visa. American passport holders can also obtain a visa-on-arrival at any international airport in Egypt.

Embassy Issued Tourist Visas

Applying for your visa at an Egyptian Embassy or consulate office is easy and straightforward, although it is probably not the most convenient option. You can apply in person or you can get someone else to apply for your visa on your behalf. They can also collect your visa for you. However, the person doing it for you will need to show a letter of authorization. At the time of writing, a single entry tourist visa cost $25, while a multi-entry tourist visa cost $60. Processing of applications can take up to 7 days.

Applying for an Egypt E-Visa

To apply for an e-Visa, simply visit the official Egypt e-Visa Portal and set up an account. Once you have done so, just fill out the application form and then submit it along with scanned copies of your passport and etc. You will also need to submit payment. Once payment has been received, your application will be processed. At the time of writing, a 30-day tourist e-visa cost $25 and the process has been taking about 5 to 7 days.

Tourist Visa on Arrival

Like many other nationalities, American citizen or those traveling on an American passport can get a tourist visa at the airport when they arrive in the country. Is Egypt Safe for Americans?

Egypt is seen as being a very safe travel destination for tourists, including American tourists. We do however recommend that visitors exercise some common sense precautions. Visitors should, for example, avoid dark and mostly deserted areas at night. They should also avoid getting involved in debates about divisive topics such as religion and politics.

As is always the case when visiting unfamiliar places, visitors should remain alert and aware of their surroundings, particularly when visiting popular tourist attractions or other crowded areas such as the Khan el Khalili Bazaar in Cairo.

Is Egypt Safe for LGBT+ Travelers?

For LGBT+ travelers, discretion is advised. Although Egypt does not have any laws prohibiting same gender relationships, several members of the LGBT+ community have been convicted for other offenses and given long prison sentences. In Egypt, it is not uncommon for male friends to hold hands. However, visitors should not mistake this for homosexuality, or as a sign of acceptance of homosexuality.

Is Tap Water Safe to Drink?

Tap water in Egypt is not safe to drink. Visitors are strongly advised to only drink bottled water during their stay. Tap water in some upmarket hotels and on some cruise ships is supposedly safe to drink, although we would still recommend drinking only bottled water which is both cheap and plentiful in Egypt.

When is the Best Time to Visit Egypt?

The best time to visit Egypt, in terms of weather, would be during the high season that runs from October to April. However, if low prices and bargain Egypt tour packages are your primary concern, then it would be best to visit during the low season which runs from May to September.

What are the Best Attractions to Visit in Egypt?

Egypt has so many marvelous ancient attractions that it is almost impossible to say which the best ones are. Some attractions which we believe every visitor should make an effort to see would include:

  • Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx – Cairo
  • Abu Simbel Temples – Aswan
  • Temple of Philae – Aswan
  • Valley of the Kings – Luxor
  • Hatshepsut Temple – Luxor
  • Karnak Temple – Luxor
  • Temple of Horus – Edfu

While many other attractions also come highly recommended, people booking Egypt tours packages from USA should look for travel packages that feature all, or at the very least, most of the above attractions.

What are the Best Hotels in Egypt?

Egypt has an abundance of hotels that cater for all sorts of budgets, particularly in popular tourist destinations such as Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Alexandria, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh. If comfort and quality are important to you, then we would recommend staying in either 4-Star or 5-Star hotels. Some of our favorites include those owned by hotel groups like Movenpick, Hilton, and Sonesta.

What to Pack for Egypt Tours?

The best advice anyone could give about what to pack for a trip to Egypt, would be that you should pack for the climate. Egypt os a hot and sunny destination, so one should pack with this in mind. Lightweight cotton garments tend to be the best choice. We also recommend  packing some sun protection items such as a good sunscreen lotion, sun glasses and a wide-brimmed hat.
